QUALICUM BEACH COMMUNITY PROFILE -

The population structure for 1981-1996 indicates that the population of the
Regional District of Nanaimo has been aging. The forecast suggests that by 2016
approximately half the population will be over 44 years old. Coupling this general
trend of aging with the large number of newcomers that have moved into the Regional
District suggests that there will be little if any extended family support to
assist the older residents. By moving away from family and friends, these individuals
can no longer rely on internal sources of support. This will likely mean an increase
in the level of in-home nursing, meal services, gardening, cleaning and even companionship
over the next 25 years. This offers tremendous business opportunities for entrepreneurs
who can offer reliable caring services to these individuals.
The baby boom demographic trend will also result in a general
increase in the demand for better quality personal services in order to save time
and get the quality they demand. This will likely mean a growing presence of smaller
specialty retail stores.
