QUALICUM BEACH WINS THE NATIONAL CAPITAL
COMMISSION 2002 FLORAL AWARD!
On October 5, 2002 the City of Kelowna hosted
the 8th edition of the Communities in Bloom National Awards Ceremony honouring
municipalities from each province and territory in Canada.
At
this ceremony the Town of Qualicum Beach was presented with the 2002
National Capital Commission Floral Award for "The Most Beautiful and Innovative
Floral Displays in Canada". The judges went on to state that "the
Town's profusion of colourful hanging baskets, planters and floral art, compliments
the private gardens in which local residents take such pride." A
beautiful trophy, commissioned from Canadian artist Shirley Elford, designer
of the Juno Music Award trophy, was presented to the Town of Qualicum Beach
by Ed Laurence, Head Gardener of the National Capital Commission.
Beautiful! WOW! Fabulous! These are just a few of the phrases one might say
upon driving around Qualicum Beach. The municipal, commercial and private sector
all take great pride in their floral displays. There is a wide variety of species,
pleasing colour and designs and a special bed that highlight's the Town's 60th
anniversary. All gardens are immaculate; plants are deadheaded, there are no
weeds and beds are neatly edged. The hanging baskets and other containers accentuate
the downtown charm. Homeowners proudly display their flowers. Everywhere one
looks in Qualicum Beach captures the eye with floral beauty.
Qualicum Beach also entered the International Exchange and
mentored the American municipality of Sequim Washington in the American in
Bloom Challenge. Qualicum Beach received the prestigious "5 bloom" award
with Special Mention for their Grandon and Beach Creek Restoration projects.
Sequim Washington received a very admirable "4 blooms" and received
Special Mention for their Lavender Festival Celebrations.
