By installing robust culverts to manage the water flow from 700 hectares of land – including the commercial core and village neighbourhoods – the Beach Creek Estuary and Marine Spit initiative restored natural conditions to the creek outlet, enhanced fish access and reduced predation on salmon returning to spawn. Since the project’s completion, Coho salmon have been returning to spawn in the creek each year, thriving in their newly protected habitat.

Additionally, a marine spit was constructed to protect the Beach Creek Estuary and foreshore from extreme weather events and rising sea levels. During the king tide event in January 2022, while neighboring seawalls failed, the shoreline protected by the new spit remained intact.

The Town’s consulting engineers on the project, AtkinsRéalis, won the Natural Resource and Habitat category of the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies B.C. annual awards program.

Marine Spit

  • July to Sept 2019 – Large rocks and foreshore materials were placed to form the foundation of the marine spit.
  • September 2019 to Summer 2020 – The foreshore materials were allowed to settle, be tested by the winter storms, and adjusted as needed.
  • Fall 2020 – Reorientating materials to optimize the design of the spit and estuary.
  • Summer 2021 – Final settling of materials and landscaping.

Beach Creek drains 700 hectares including the commercial core and village neighbourhood. Historical air photography indicated that the outlet of Beach Creek, near the foot of Memorial Avenue, had been highly altered by past development.

The estuary has been infilled and the stream re-routed through culverts that have acted as a barrier to fish passage for over 65 years. Rapidly generated high volume runoff, laden with pollutants from the commercial core, directed to Beach Creek were degrading the habitat and natural condition of the Creek.

Following the Drainage Study of 1993, the Town began to undertake several infrastructure projects to divert the unsuitable runoff away from Beach Creek and in 1999, completed an innovative day-lighting of the Creek around development near the outlet that re-established fish access.

This project received $1,431,750 in funding from the Province of B.C. and the Federal Government through the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund.
