The Beach Creek Estuary and Marine Spit project installed engineered culverts to manage runoff from over 700 hectares of land, including the commercial core and village neighbourhoods.
This Green Shores initiative restored natural flow at the creek outlet, improved access for fish, and reduced predation on spawning salmon. Since completion, Coho salmon have returned each year to spawn, thriving in the revitalized habitat.
To further protect the estuary and foreshore from rising sea levels and extreme weather, a marine spit was constructed. During the king tide in January 2022, while nearby seawalls sustained damage, the shoreline behind the spit remained intact.
The project earned provincial recognition when the Town’s consulting engineers SNC-Lavalin received the top award in the Natural Resource and Habitat category from the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies B.C. annual awards program.
