Deferment of Property Taxes

Deferment of Property Taxes

Tax Deferment Programs
The Property Tax Deferment programs are low interest loan programs provided by the provincial government which allow qualifying owners to have the province pay their current property taxes on their behalf.

The provincial government offers two tax deferment programs:

Regular Property Tax Deferment Program: Offered to homeowners who are:
    • 55 years of age or older,
    • A surviving spouse of any age,
    • Or a person with disabilities.

The owner must have, and maintain, a minimum equity of 25% on their home.

Families with Children Property Tax Deferment Program: Offered to homeowners of any age who are financially supporting a dependent child under the age of 18, whether the child lives with the homeowner full-time, part-time, or not at all.

The owner must have, and maintain, a minimum equity of 15% on their home.
