Building Applications and Resources

A registered owner or an agent for the owner may apply for a Building Permit. Once a Building Permit is issued, construction must start within six months and be completed within 24 months. All permits expire 24 months after the date of permit issuance. It is possible to renew a permit for an additional 6 months.

  • Review and gather all required documentation and information before applying.
  • It is the responsibility of the permit recipient to call for all required inspections throughout the building process.
  • Projects requiring Development Permits, Works and Services and Easement Agreements, or other approvals must be completed before submitting a Building Permit Application.

  • Hazardous Materials Assessment (homes built before 1990)
  • BC Housing New Home Registration Form (if required)
  • Sewage/Septic Filing Form (if required)
  • Erosion and Sediment Control Plan (where the disturbed area exceeds 500 m2 )
  • Other approvals as required by the Town (Development Permits, Variances, Works and Services etc.)

Building Permit FAQ

A Building Permit is required when you:

  • Construct any new building or structure
  • Construct a new accessory building (greater than 10 m²)
  • Make alterations, additions or structural repairs to an existing building or structure
  • Create a secondary suite or garden suite
  • Make interior structural renovations
  • Demolish or relocate a building or structure
  • Locate or relocate a manufactured or mobile home on a lot
  • Remodel or construct a deck
  • Construct/install a swimming pool
  • Install or alter plumbing within a building or structure
  • Install a new chimney, fireplace, or woodstove
  • Enclose your carport or change your garage to living space
  • Change the use or occupancy of an existing building or space (i.e. from office to retail)

Projects cannot start, including demolition or excavation, until a building permit has been issued.

Complete applications can expect a processing time is three to four weeks for residential permits (new houses, additions, alterations, and accessory buildings), small commercial projects without development permits or off-site works and services, and tenant improvement permits.
Large commercial permits, including development permits and/or off-site works and services, vary by project.
