The Waterfront Expansion Project aims to create additional parking spaces and includes the development of bicycle/pedestrian shoulders to facilitate active transportation. The ultimate goal is to make the waterfront safer and more accessible for all users.
So far, the project has been broken into two phases:
Central Waterfront Area (Summer 2021 – May 2023 )
- Create new parking by infilling 420 meters of roadside ditch and adding gravel and guidelines along the south side of Highway 19A (see map here).
- Install a servicing kiosk pad for mobile vendors/food trucks next to the Tourist Information Centre, and add a covered seating area to accommodate all-weather use.
- Implement traffic calming measures, including multiple crosswalks, to create a safer experience for all waterfront users.
East/West Waterfront Area (Summer 2024 – November 2024)
- Create new parking along the central waterfront by infilling 400 meters of roadside ditch on the east and west of Highway 19A (see map here).
- Install 400 metres of bicycle-accessible shoulder to create a safer experience for all waterfront users.
