Skate Park Reconstruction

Skate Park Reconstruction

The Town is preparing for the upgrade or replacement of the existing skatepark located in the Town of Qualicum Beach Community Park. The existing park was constructed approximately 25 years ago and is at the end of its usable life. A skatepark user group has organized to advocate for a comprehensive upgrade or replacement of the park, and a consultant (New Line Skateparks) was engaged in 2023 to undertake a Feasibility Study, including a conceptual plan, project scope and potential budget. This work is now complete.

Due to the outdated design, extensive weathering, and lack of site integration, the report from Newline Skateparks recommends reconstructing the current skatepark with a new facility that addresses the site integration issues, provides modern terrain geared towards users of all ability levels and allows for development of athletes and wheeled sports enthusiasts in the community and surrounding areas. In addition to the direct benefit to users of the upgraded skatepark, the conceptual design also includes improvements to the broader Community Park.

  • Reconstruction of the skatepark will open up views to the skatepark from the Civic Centre parking lot to improve public safety and connectivity.
  • The design includes an accessible connection from the Civic Centre parking lot to the playing field area along the informal pathway already on the site.
  • The design provides multipurpose seating at the height of land that can serve both the skate park and adjacent playing fields.
Construction of the new skatepark is budgeted for 2025. After the user group has raised their portion of the funding, a staff report will be prepared for Council, to assist with governance decision-making and to support issuance of the tender documents and ultimately award the construction contract.

A community group has been raising funds to contribute toward a new Skatepark through an online fundraising platform (Canada Helps) as well as grant applications. Since adoption of the Town’s Financial Plan on March 13, 2024, the group has raised the following funds to contribute toward a new Skatepark.

Fundraising Source Funding Amount
Rotary Club Grant (awarded but not yet received) $50,000
Lions Club Grant $2,500
109 donations through Canada Helps $33,231.82
User Group Fundraising total (as of August 13, 2024) $85,731.82

Funds are transferred from Canada Helps to the Town on a biweekly schedule, where they are held in a dedicated account for the skatepark project.
