Drainage & Wastewater

Stormwater
Roads, parking lots and other urban infrastructure prevent rainwater and snowmelt from being absorbed into the ground. As a result, stormwater drains into lakes and creeks, increasing the risk of flood or erosion.
The Town has a responsibility to manage the quality and quantity of stormwater that is released into natural bodies of water, such as Grandon Creek, Beach Creek and the ocean.
To ensure stormwater is drained responsibly, the Town performs ditch maintenance, inlet and outlet maintenance and pipe flushing whenever necessary. The Operations Department maintains catchbasins, outfalls, culverts and storm drainage throughout the Town. The Town’s drainage system includes 49.1 km of storm mains, 9.5 km of culverts, 1600 catch basins, 915 maintenance-holes, 6.9 km of catch basin and service laterals, and 40 km of open ditches.
Ditch Infill Permit Application
Ditches play a key role in the effective drainage of stormwater. Residents are required to complete and submit a ditch infill permit application when they would like to install a storm culvert and backfill an existing open ditch.
